During the 19th century Imperialism took over Africa. The major countries of Europe were all investing in Africa with Britain leading the way. African countries and cultures were swallowed up with war, slavery, religious changes, and completely new ways of life. Countries like Britain used the African people to keep them from debt by using the open market trading system in Africa with the resources already there. The Europeans had no business using up the resources that African people had been using for centuries.

Britain and France together control most of Africa. The other remaining European countries each have smaller African nations under control. A lot of the times Europeans would get countries in all corners of Africa to capitalize on all the different kinds of resources all over.

Countries in control:
Britain- Egypt, Sudan, British Somalia, British East Africa(Kenya), Uganda, Nigeria, Gold Coast, Sierra Leone, Gambia, Northern Rhodesia, Southern Rhodesia, Nyasaland, Bechuanaland, South Africa, Swaziland, Basutoland.
France- French Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, French West Africa, French Equatorial Africa, French Somaliland, Madagascar.
Belgium- Belgian Congo

Almost every European country tried to force their religion on the African people. In some cases this was better because the missionaries would work hard to improve schooling, medicine, and even opposed the slave trade. They were forcing beliefs upon the people, but in return they were very good to the people and improved life overall. Without the missionaries help more Africans would have resisted imperialism causing even more war. Basically the missionaries took a more peaceful route of gaining control in Africa.
